SAINT JOSEPH HEART INSTITUTE IS ONLY HOSPITAL IN CENTRAL AND EASTERN KY PERFORMING BREAKTHROUGH HEART PROCEDURE
[February 2, 2010] --- Saint Joseph Hospital is once again a trailblazer in heart care. Widely known as the “Heart Hospital,” it is now offering a remarkable new procedure through Saint Joseph Heart Institute that utilizes robotic technology to change the way heart surgery is performed—making open-chest surgery a closed-chest procedure, which means less pain, faster healing and a shorter hospital stay. The traditional heart bypass, or other open-heart surgery, requires a 10-inch incision, a split in the breastbone and a retractor to separate the ribs. Using the da Vinci robotic technology at Saint Joseph Hospital, surgeons now typically just make three tiny incisions less than 1 cm, and the chest is not “cracked open” at all—making a once invasive procedure minimally invasive for eligible patients. The three small incisions, each less than 1 cm, are tiny ports through which Dr. Sekela and fellow surgeons utilize the da Vinci system to perform the bypass, or other heart procedure. The movements of the robot’s wrists are controlled by the surgeon who sits at a computer console which provides high-definition, full-color, magnified 3-D images of the surgical site made available by the endoscope. Saint Joseph Hospital currently operates two da Vinci robots and staffs an experienced surgical team fully trained for cardiac surgery procedures utilizing the robotic technology. Visit Saint Joseph’s new Web site, www.HeartCareBreakthrough.com, to learn more about da Vinci heart surgery.

Free Tax Preparation for Qualified Taxpayers in the Bluegrass
[January 7, 2010] --- Free tax preparation and filing is being offered to households making less than $49,000 by United Way and local partners. The free service aims to help Central Kentuckians claim overlooked tax credits and receive the tax returns they have earned. In an effort to help families claim all entitled tax credits and keep the money in the Bluegrass, trained volunteers certified by the IRS will staff sites across Central Kentucky for free tax preparation. These volunteers will help households receive 100% of their tax return, most in less than 10 days. Every year, Kentuckians miss out on tax credits like the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), a credit created to support working families. Tax credits like this one are overlooked by thousands of families because people either don’t know that they exist or don’t know that they are eligible. The IRS estimates that as many as 25% of eligible workers are missing out on the EITC alone, worth up to $4,800 for each person that qualifies. Appointments and inquiries can be made by dialing 2-1-1. This free tax preparation service is made possible by United Way of the Bluegrass, Community Action Council, CKEEP – an initiative of LexLinc and Kentucky Poverty Law Center – and others.
