Retired parking meters have been turned into brightly decorated works of art by several local artists and placed in business lobbies throughout Lexington. Change collected from the meters will be given to local organizations that address homelessness issues such as the Salvation Army. A Nude for the New Year
[January 12, 2012] - The new year has brought a stunning new sculpture to the Art Museum at the University of Kentucky: Female Figure by Lexington native Daniel Ludwig, a contemporary artist who is known for his mastery of classical traditions. Ludwig was involved in every step of the process in creating this life-size figure study, from sculpting the original in wax, to working closely with a foundry in Rhode Island on casting, and then hand-finishing the piece. He created and applied the patina—a combination of three chemicals which provide subtle color variations of deep bronze and green—himself. The Museum also owns a painting and a smaller sculpture by Ludwig, both of which are currently on display. The artist will give a public talk about his work at the Museum in May, with an exact date to be determined.

The Y Urges Healthier Habits for Kids during Childhood Obesity Awareness Month
[September 9, 2011] --- September is National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month, and the YMCA of Central Kentucky is reminding parents about the importance of incorporating regular physical activity and healthier eating habits into their children’s lives. One key to fighting childhood obesity is prevention. Regular physical activity – 60 minutes a day for children – and nutritious foods like fruits, vegetables and whole grains can lower children’s chances of becoming obese or overweight and developing chronic diseases. It’s important to note that 60 minutes of physical activity can be achieved through a number of activities throughout the entire day – it doesn’t have to be done all at once. As a leading nonprofit strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility, the Y believes that getting kids more active and allowing them to play is an important factor in improving their health. The YMCA of Central Kentucky offers programs such Take Ten at Glendover and Southside Elementary Schools and Jumpin’ Jaguars at William Wells Brown. In a fun, enriching environment, these programs have helped children by increasing physical activity, educating on healthy behavior and food choices.

Comingled Recycling Dumpsters Now Available to Lexington Businesses
[August 25, 2011] --- Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government’s Division of Waste Management and Bluegrass PRIDE are happy to announce a new Fayette County recycling initiative. Businesses and organizations within Fayette County that are large producers of recyclable materials are now eligible to utilize comingled recycling dumpsters instead of the blue recycling Rosie containers. Recycling dumpsters are the same size as regular trash dumpsters, but can be used to place all recyclable material, such as cardboard boxes, plastic bottles, paper, and more. If your organization is interested in utilizing a recycling dumpster, there are three steps you will need to take. The first is to contact Bluegrass PRIDE at 859.266.1572 and request to speak with a Program Manager. They will help you begin the process. Next, you will need to contact your solid waste hauler (Veolia, Rumpke, M&M, etc) to request a new dumpster for comingled recycling, not just cardboard. These normally range from a $20 - $25.00 monthly rental fee. Finally, your organization will need to work with Bluegrass PRIDE to come up with an education plan on how to train your employees, staff members, or patrons about what should and should not be recycled. This education plan is simple and Bluegrass PRIDE will help your organization design and implement the plan. Before LFUCG permits the new comingled recycling dumpster, an LFUCG representative will need to approve the location your organization would like to place the comingled recycling dumpster. This incurs a one-time $25.00 permitting fee. If your organization would like to turn an existing trash dumpster into a comingled recycling dumpster, no permitting fee will be required. However, your organization will still need to contact Bluegrass PRIDE and design an education plan.
