[March 6, 2012] - Create Jobs / Run Government Efficiently / Build a Great American City - these were the themes introduced by Mayor Jim Gray during his State of the Merged Government Speech in January. At the same time, one of Creation’s customers, BigBelly Solar, was working with the Lexington Parks and Recreation Department to review the impact of three solar compactors currently installed at Veteran’s Park, Shillito Park and Cardinal Run Park. It occurred to the Creation team that one way to help keep the city green and potentially grow business would be to donate a BigBelly solar compactor to the City of Lexington to be placed downtown coupled with an agreement from BigBelly Solar to provide service and training. BigBelly Solar partnered with Creation Technologies in 2010 to build their complete compactor units. “Congratulations to Creation Technologies,” Mayor Jim Gray recently said. “They have built a great green product and new jobs. A Nude for the New Year
[January 12, 2012] - The new year has brought a stunning new sculpture to the Art Museum at the University of Kentucky: Female Figure by Lexington native Daniel Ludwig, a contemporary artist who is known for his mastery of classical traditions. The beautifully modeled bronze nude was purchased with funds provided by the Museum’s Collectors group, whose dues are used to acquire important works of art for the Museum. Ludwig was involved in every step of the process in creating this life-size figure study, from sculpting the original in wax, to working closely with a foundry in Rhode Island on casting, and then hand-finishing the piece. He created and applied the patina—a combination of three chemicals which provide subtle color variations of deep bronze and green—himself. The Museum also owns a painting and a smaller sculpture by Ludwig, both of which are currently on display. The artist will give a public talk about his work at the Museum in May, with an exact date to be determined.

At the breakfast meeting, Gene Wilhoit, executive director of the Council of Chief State School Officers, spoke to the group about making education in kindergarten through 12th grades more effective to better prepare students for post-secondary education — an increasingly necessary factor for success in a society in which technology and careers are changing rapidly. After the meeting concluded, Wilhoit spent time with Asbury’s graduate students in the Principal Licensure and Teacher as Leader programs, taking questions and discussing with them the unique opportunities and responsibilities they will face as leaders in their schools.
