Central KY Delegation Visited Minneapolis-Saint Paul to Study Region's Successes & Challenges
On June 7-9, 2017, Commerce Lexington Inc. and many of its key community leaders and business professionals embarked on the organization’s annual Leadership Visit presented by the McBrayer Law Firm. About 180 people participated in this year's trip to the Minneapolis-Saint Paul region to study the area’s successes and challenges in the hopes of further enhancing the Bluegrass Region.
One of the longest-running and largest intercity visits of its kind among chambers of commerce and economic development groups nationally, Commerce Lexington’s annual trip has influenced many community initiatives and programs, such as the Access Loan small business financing program, Coldstream Research Park, the wildly-popular Thursday Night Live, enhancements in our trail system, improvements in Fayette County Public Schools facilities, and the recently-created EMERGE conference for emerging leaders.
The Bluegrass delegation opened the visit to Minneapolis-Saint Paul at the University of Minnesota’s McNamara Alumni Center with a panel discussion that included University of Kentucky President Dr. Eli Capilouto and University of Minnesota President Dr. Eric Kaler. Then, the group headed to Saint Paul to hear from former Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak, who was among the speakers talking about regionalism.
The sessions on day two (June 8) covered talent retention and recruitment, arts and culture, how leaders approach the city’s built environment, and why the region has become such an attractive place for so many Fortune 500 companies. The final day’s sessions focused on helping participants understand their unconscious biases that may be creating roadblocks to closing opportunity gaps in education, workforce and economic attainment.
