The 2025- 2026 Leadership Lexington class experienced an unforgettable Equine Day on May 14, 2026, highlighting why the horse industry is such a defining part of Central Kentucky’s identity and economy. As was proven throughout the day, and stated by Steering Committee Member Hallie Hardy, “No one does horses like Central Kentucky.”
The day began at Keeneland just in time for morning works for thoroughbreds on the track.  Class participants were able to watch horses work right from the rail before engaging in roundtable discussions that showcased the many layers of Lexington culture and hospitality. Conversations ranged from the economics of the industry to learning the basics of how to wager at the races, giving participants a broader understanding of the people, traditions, and experiences that shape Kentucky’s equine community.
From there, the class traveled to the Kentucky Horse Park, where participants learned more about the world of competitive horsemanship. Class members were introduced to disciplines including hunter jumping, dressage, and other equestrian events that require incredible partnership, athleticism, and precision between horse and rider. The visit highlighted not only the beauty of these sports, but also the deep level of training and care involved in the equine industry.
The next stop was Central Kentucky Riding for Hope, where the class witnessed the profound impact therapeutic riding can have on children and individuals with diverse needs. Participants learned how meaningful relationships with horses can support emotional growth, physical development, confidence, and healing. Staff shared how programs are carefully tailored to meet the unique needs of each participant and emphasized the organization’s ongoing need for volunteers to support their mission and expanding programs.

The class then visited historic Mill Ridge Farm, where participants had the opportunity to get up close and personal with several broodmares currently in foal. The visit provided an inside look at the breeding side of the Thoroughbred industry and the level of care, planning, and investment involved in raising future racehorses. Standing alongside these mares offered a unique perspective on the legacy and tradition that continue to define Kentucky’s horse farms.

The day concluded back at Keeneland, where class members participated in a mock auction to better understand the business side of the equine industry. Participants learned about the significant economic impact generated by the many sales hosted by Keeneland each year and gained insight into the global reach of Kentucky’s Thoroughbred marketplace. The experience offered a fitting conclusion to a day centered on the culture, compassion, competition, and commerce that make the equine industry such a vital part of Central Kentucky.

Overall, Equine Day gave the Leadership Lexington Class a deeper appreciation for the people, organizations, and industries that make Lexington the Horse Capital of the World.
