Blue Grass Airport Infrastructure Plans Presented to Kentucky Aviation Task Force

7/17/2025

On July 14, the executive directors of Blue Grass Airport, Louisville Regional Airport, and Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport presented to the Kentucky General Assembly’s Air Mobility & Aviation Economic Development Task Force. The discussion focused on updates about upcoming renovations and long-term growth plans for each facility to improve air services in Kentucky.

Erik Frankl, Executive Director of Blue Grass Airport, highlighted the significant growth Bluegrass Airport has experienced over the past 16 years. With passenger traffic expected to almost double over the next 10 to 20 years, Frankl emphasized the need for a comprehensive expansion plan to accommodate future demand.

Key projects underway at Bluegrass Airport include:
  • A major parking and roadway expansion: This initiative will add over 815 new parking spaces, a second covered walkway to the terminal, a new exit plaza, and upgraded traffic lanes. The improvements are designed to improve passenger flow and ease congestion while incorporating new technology and equipment. Construction is already in progress and is scheduled for completion by spring 2026.
  • Relocation of the air traffic control tower: Originally built in 1972, the existing tower is not only outdated but also limits the airport’s ability to expand. Moving the tower will allow for future development opportunities and modernized operations.
  • Terminal Expansion: Increasing the number of gates enables the airport to handle more flights and offer enhanced amenities for passengers and staff. However, this project is dependent upon the successful relocation of the air traffic control tower.

The infrastructure investments will strengthen Blue Grass Airport’s role as a key economic player in the region and as an asset for economic development. Currently, the airport offers 19 direct flights via four airlines, supports over 4,700 jobs, contributes $180 million in annual payroll, and generates approximately $709 million in annual economic output. Located only 75 miles from Cincinnati and Louisville, Greater LEX’s proximity to three major airports is a strategic advantage for talent attraction and economic development. Between the three airports, 100 direct flights are offered, making air service a competitive advantage for the 9-county region.

Supporting state and federal investments in Bluegrass Airport and other regional air assets remains a top policy priority for Commerce Lexington and regional leaders.
