Leadership Lexington’s November session, Government Day, gave class members a glimpse into the people and processes of our local government and judicial systems.

The day started in LFUCG’s council chambers with Mayor Linda Gorton. Throughout her remarks, Mayor Gorton stressed that LFUCG’s government exists to serve the people of Lexington. She recognized the many employees who work behind the scenes each day to keep our city running efficiently. Mayor Gorton’s passion for public service was evident.

The class then heard from four LFUCG Commissioners, as well as the Chief Administrative Officer. During this panel discussion, the passion for service theme continued. Each Commissioner discussed how they serve the community through projects and initiatives within their area of oversight, whether it is combatting the homelessness crisis, establishing more accessible transportation, supporting public safety, or managing LFUCG’s finances.

Budget Simulation
Class members concluded the morning by participating in an interactive budget simulation. The class was divided into five groups that were each responsible for developing a portion of LFUCG’s budget. Each group separately made a series of decisions to establish their individual budget section. The groups then came together as the “city council” to establish an overall balanced budget. Accomplishing this with a group of “council members” holding widely varying interests proved difficult. Finalizing the mock budget required open dialogue and compromise and the class left the simulation with a greater appreciation for the complexity of the budgeting process, as well as the collaboration that is needed for it to be successful.

The session then moved to the Robert F. Stephens Circuit Courthouse. A panel of seven LFUCG council members started the afternoon by discussing issues and successes in each of their districts. Challenges including housing affordability, equity, and the need for improved public infrastructure were noted by the councilmembers. However, they discussed how citizens coming together can overcome these challenges. To end the discussion, each council member was asked what makes their district special. Each response was centered around the people who live in the district.

The judicial system was the focus of discussion in the second half of the afternoon. Fayette County’s Commonwealth’s Attorney and representatives from the Fayette County Attorney’s Office and the Public Defenders discussed the legal process from the viewpoints of both the prosecution and defense. Both sides discussed working together to bring about justice while respecting the rights of accused individuals. They also discussed the need for
our community to address crises such as homelessness and addiction that oftentimes lead to crime and repeat offenders.
Government Day ended with a panel discussion with judges from the District and Circuit Courts, Court of Appeals, and the Kentucky Supreme Court. The panelists explained the role each of their courts play in Lexington and Kentucky’s judicial system, as well as how they approach their jobs to ensure fairness to all parties involved.

The day was filled with insights from community leaders who are passionate about helping the citizens of Lexington and the Commonwealth through government service. Class members left the day inspired to find new ways to become engaged with our local government and shape the future of our community.
