Piramal Pharma Solutions Breaks Ground on $80 Million Expansion at UK Coldstream Research Campus

6/26/2025

On Wednesday, June 25, Piramal Pharma Solutions hosted a groundbreaking ceremony at the University of Kentucky’s Coldstream Research Campus, marking the beginning of a significant investment nearing $80 million. This expansion project represents Greater Lexington and its strategic development efforts in the biotechnology sector, one of the region’s fastest growing industries. The expansion is expected to create at least 45 new full-time positions in Lexington.

Piramal Pharma Solutions, a division of Piramal Pharma Ltd., is a leading global Contract Development and Manufacturing Organization. The company holds approvals from both the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and Japan’s Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Agency. Piramal offers fully integrated services, including analytical testing, formulation development, and manufacturing, with a focus on sterile liquid and freeze-dried injectables for clinical trials and commercial scale production.

In January 2015, Piramal acquired Coldstream Laboratories from the University of Kentucky. The upcoming expansion will add approximately 24,000 square feet to its existing facility, enabling the installation of a new filling line, two commercial-scale freeze dryers, a specialized capping machine, and an external vial washer. These additions will enhance production efficiency and increase the output of injectable pharmaceuticals, critical products for patients and healthcare providers alike.

This project is the result of a strong collaboration between Commerce Lexington, the Lexington Economic Partnership, and the University of Kentucky’s Coldstream Research Campus. Piramal also received support through Kentucky Business Investment (KBI) and Kentucky Enterprise Initiative Act (KEIA) incentives, granted by the Kentucky Economic Development Finance Authority.

The expansion at UK’s Coldstream Research Campus is anticipated to strengthen Piramal’s ties to the University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy, currently ranked sixth in the nation. This proximity helps foster a direct pipeline from academic training to industry careers, providing valuable opportunities for UK students and supporting the development of Lexington’s highly skilled workforce.

This investment not only reinforces Central Kentucky’s position as a growing hub for biotechnology and pharmaceutical innovation, but also exemplifies the region’s commitment to advancing healthcare, creating jobs, and fostering collaboration between academia and industry.
