POLICY INTERN'S PERSPECTIVE: "One of the Most Formative Experiences of my Young Professional Career"

4/30/2026

By Keller Riede, University of Kentucky
My time with Commerce Lexington was one of the most formative experiences of my young professional career. Through trips to Frankfort and this internship, I gained valuable insight into the complex inner workings of the legislative process. I have also had the opportunity to connect with lawmakers and key contributors shaping Kentucky’s policy landscape.

I attended numerous committee meetings during the General Assembly’s most recent Legislative Session, gaining firsthand experience in how decisions are made and interpreted within the legislative sphere. In addition to the meetings attended, I engaged in numerous projects in which I was tasked to provide in-depth analysis of developing policy for the Commonwealth as well as examining all introduced legislation to see if the proposed impact aligned with our interests of Commerce Lexington. This experience deepened my understanding of public policy in a way that simply isn’t possible in a classroom setting.

I have never encountered such a strong investment in my future during an internship. Anthony and Andi consistently went out of their way to introduce me to the right people, helping expand my network and connecting me with individuals who may play an important role in my career moving forward.

I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity I had at Commerce Lexington and plan to continue pursuing a path in public policy- one that now feels more accessible thanks to the guidance and support I received during my time here.

Thank you to the entire team for fostering such a welcoming environment and supporting me every step of the way.
