Omaha Trip 2013
The 2013 Commerce Lexington Inc. Leadership Visit to Omaha, Nebraska, presented by CHASE / J.P. Morgan got a delayed start due to heavy fog on the day of departure at Blue Grass Airport. However, that didn’t stop the delegation of more than 190 people from making the most of the extra time by networking and breaking up into brainstorming groups on the various concourse areas of the airport to talk about the key ingredients for their most effective Leadership Visit.
WEDNESDAY, MAY 8, 2013:
Upon arrival in Omaha, the group was welcomed at the University of Nebraska at Omaha’s Mammel Hall by Commerce Lexington Inc. Board Chair Danny Murphy, Lexington Mayor Jim Gray, Omaha Mayor Jim Suttle, and Kevin Sutphin representing our presenting sponsor CHASE/J.P. Morgan.
Additionally, Jeremy Pietrocini, senior consultant with Gallup Inc., which is headquartered in Omaha, made some comparisons between Omaha and Lexington. During the late afternoon of day one, an elective tour of The Mastercraft took a portion of the group to the mixed-use building in North Downtown Omaha inhabited by start-ups and creative companies. Originally opened in 1941, the facility has been transformed into a creative center that houses companies from design to architecture to law.
In the evening, the delegation got a look at the Joslyn Art Museum during the Opening Night Reception sponsored by McBrayer, McGinnis, Leslie & Kirkland, PLLC, before breaking up into group dinners at restaurants throughout Omaha.
THURSDAY, MAY 9, 2013:
Day two of the Leadership Visit started with an informative panel that included representatives from four of Omaha’s FORTUNE 500 companies, as well as the largest privately-held bank in the country. The panel that included individuals from Union Pacific, First National Bank, ConAgra Foods, Mutual of Omaha, and Kiewit Corporation talked about why their businesses have remained in Omaha for so many years, and how they sell the city when they recruit new employees to the area.
Then, Lyn Wallin Ziegenbein, talked about the philanthropic culture in Omaha from her perspective as executive director of the Peter Kiewit Foundation. The final session of the morning featured a panel of Omaha’s young professionals, who talked about what the city does well that helps attract and retain the younger generation and what still needs to be done to maintain the momentum of its young professional organization.
Following some elective sessions in the afternoon, which enabled participants to see Omaha through several guided tours, the delegation enjoyed great food and networking at the Bank Reception and Dinner at 801 Chophouse.
FRIDAY, MAY 10, 2013:
The final day of the Omaha trip began with a panel that emphasized the Power of Regional Partnering within the Omaha-Lincoln corridor, as well as the Omaha metro region. Following that, Commerce Lexington Inc. Board Chair Danny Murphy interviewed Terry Kroeger, president and publisher of the Omaha World-Herald, during an interactive session that allowed participants to ask questions on a variety of topics from the economy to education to his relationship and interaction with Warren Buffett.
The trip closed out with a “self-reflection” session led by Ryan Lisk (Lisk Associates) and Molly Sutherland (Sutherland & Associates), who asked the participants to rate themselves based on whether they achieved their goals for the trip using real-time texting from their mobile devices.
