Building a More Competitive Greater Lexington Region

Increase the Regional Labor Force:
The availability of skilled workers is critical to economic success – perhaps the most important factor in sustaining growth and competitiveness. Greater Lexington has experienced slower labor force growth compared to other regions, making talent attraction and retention a top priority. To address this challenge, Commerce Lexington has developed a regional talent attraction website - lookatlex.com - to highlight career opportunities, quality of life, and the benefits of living and working in Central Kentucky. In addition, we launched a new social and digital media marketing campaign targeting alumni and visitors. By showcasing the region as a vibrant, forward-thinking place to build a career and life, we aim to bring new talent to the area and reconnect with those who have ties to our community.

Aligning the Education-to-Workforce Pipeline:
Commerce Lexington emphasizes talent development by fostering stronger alignment between education and industry needs. By supporting initiatives that build a seamless education-to-workforce pipeline, we ensure that students graduate equipped with the skills, credentials, and experiences that meet the demands of local employers.

Strengthening Business-to-Student Connections to Enhance Retention:
Retaining young adults is a key driver of regional prosperity. To improve talent retention, Commerce Lexington is working with employers and educational institutions to enhance connections between businesses and students. Through intentional strategies, Commerce Lexington will serve as a strategic enabler to:

  • Enhance students’ career readiness and engagement with local employers.
  • Help businesses identify and develop their future workforce.
  • Strengthen the region’s ability to retain young talent after graduation.

These efforts will not only prepare students for the workforce but also strengthen their ties to Greater Lexington, increasing the likelihood they remain in the region after graduation.
Preparing for the Future:
As workforce demands evolve, Commerce Lexington remains committed to addressing critical talent gaps through collaboration with business, education, and community partners. By prioritizing talent development, fostering innovation, and creating pathways for lifelong learning, we help build a workforce equipped to meet the challenges of the 21st Century.
