Things to See & Do
As the “Horse Capital of the World,” the Bluegrass Region has no shortage of horse-related activities – from horse farm tours to a day at the races to elegant equestrian events. You are sure to be an “honorary horseman” before your visit to the area ends.
There’s nothing like starting the morning by catching a glimpse of the powerful Thoroughbred horses warming up at sunrise and then enjoying Breakfast with the Works early Saturday morning during the Race Meet at historic Keeneland Racecourse. Keeneland’s tradition and charm transcend the average Thoroughbred racing experience, with race meets in April and October, as well as the various sales throughout the year.
Visitors to the area can also experience the horse industry at The Thoroughbred Center, which is nestled among the most lavish horse farms in Lexington. The center’s tour offers a behind-the-scenes look at the care and training of Thoroughbreds like no other.
In northern Fayette County, you’ll find the Kentucky Horse Park, which is home to the International Museum of the Horse, American Saddlebred Museum, Hall of Champions and the Parade of Breeds, the National Horse Show, and the Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event.
Even if you aren’t into horses, there are plenty of other things to do in and around the Bluegrass Region that are fun and won’t break your budget – from a visit to an orchard to riding a zipline to joining a hunt club, and more. There are plenty of tradition-rich stadiums and arenas to cheer on your favorite teams, and we’ll have you yelling “Go Big Blue!” in no time at a University of Kentucky sporting event.
Whether you want to learn more about the Bourbon-making process, enjoy a leisurely stroll through one of our many wineries and vineyards, or a visit to a local brewery, the Bluegrass has it all right here for you. With so much to see and do here, you’ll most certainly have to extend your visit, or maybe you’ll decide to stay and never want to leave.
